Dante’s trek to Heaven to be reunited with his beloved Bernice is wrought with terror before the ghost of the Roman Poet, Virgil, presents to guide the way. The only path leads them through the Nine Circles of Hell, and Ray’s sand sculpture is a fantastical interpretation of Dante’s vision as he enters Judecca, the lowest depth…

Before them is a huge, shrouded form, and Dante approaches it. It is the three-headed giant Lucifer, his body pierces the center of the Earth, where he fell when God hurled him down from Heaven. Each of Lucifer’s mouths chews one of history’s three greatest sinners: Judas, the betrayer of Christ, and Cassius and Brutus, the betrayers of Julius Caesar. Virgil leads Dante on a climb down Lucifer’s massive form, and eventually the poets reach the river of forgetfulness, traveling out of Hell back onto Earth. They emerge from Hell on Easter morning, just before sunrise.

What a statement this sculpture makes! Consider the conversation, the literal conquering of your demons, the shear intimidation of the scale, the fact that it’s Lucifer… we could go on but then this description would get to be as long as The Divine Comedy itself.
